Description

A community radio station, Radio Active, broadcasts socially relevant programmes in Kannada,Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and other languages in a 15 kilometre radius across the city of Bangalore. The radio seeks to reach out to Bangalore’s masses to create awareness among them about issues such as health, environment, development, scientific awareness, women, social issues etc. Involving groups as diverse as the LGBT community, the differently-abled, people living with HIV/AIDS, auto-drivers, senior citizens, animal rights campaigners, environment activists and many others, it enables the local community members to drive social change and educate the public regarding socially responsive behaviour. The radio station that began with a transmission of only 8 hours, today broadcasts for 15 hours and presents programmes which are produced by the community members themselves. For reaching out to its audience more effectively, the station even organises activities like eye camps, awareness drives, film festivals, quiz competitions and street plays.

Why is the project unique?

It is unique, because this is the only model of an urban community radio station located in a campus, with community participation in a heterogeneous environment The uniqueness can be judged in the following criteria: • Diversity of the participants Radio Active has different community groups by interest as part of the station’s structure which makes the station different and unique reflecting the essence of a true community radio station • Community based projects to achieve sustainability Radio Active is the only station in the country which is involved in community based projects which ensures livelihood opportunities and sustainability for the station. • Network with different NGOs and institutions, social groups etc. Radio Active is the only station in India, to have successful partnerships with various NGOs, institutions, and social groups, who actively support program production, intervention activities, outreach and training programs.

Roadmap

In the age of rapidly changing technology the digital divide can be bridged using simple easy to use electronic devices that are user friendly with their graphic user interfaces, touch screen , representational icons that even semi literate and illiterate across age groups can use and handle efficiently with their basic life skills of alpha numeric and alphabets and not only build upon their own knowledge base, they can improve their education and build upon a particular specialization that they would like to work upon. This gives them not only the ability to teach themselves but also teach others and help a small commune can be built around from a single individual to several large self supporting self help groups In India with its current status of over 30% illiteracy which is only growing due to rapid population increase these simple technologies can be efficiently used to tackle this issue through information and communication. The key lies in keeping these technologies low cost and easy to update, consuming minimal amount of energy with the focus on touch and use application. The larger the visual and audio content the easier it will be the task of information dissemination and education.
