Chikankaari Blocks Database
Description
Lucknow Chikankaari – We are trying to evolve a distributed model whereby artisans continue to stay in their villages yet are able to produce high-quality contemporary products. The major road-block in this model was the way the design would get communicated to the artisan sitting hundred of miles away. This project was aimed at creating a system using which designers and artisans could communicate with each other long-distance.
What we deliver
We deliver design catalogues to both the designers as well as artisans so that long-distance communication can happen without confusion and on the basis of concrete motifs/patterns.
Whom we deliver
250 women embroiderers in the Malihabad region of Lucknow. 1 block printer in Lucknow.
How is the project unique?
Somehow noone has thought of it before, though this is such a simple idea. I havent come across any catalogue of block prints so far. It it the intellectual property of the block printer, and the only reason they agreed to share it with us was because of the trust we could develop in them.
Roadmap
We would now like to extend this project, and create a software for the same using which the designer would be able to place different blocks on to a virtually rendered fabric and see how the designs look in entirety.
