Babajob.com
Babajob.com connects employers and informal sector workers via the web and the mobile phone (Voice, SMS, WAP). It is positioned as a scalable, replicable, profitable solution to fight poverty by creating radical efficiencies in the informal sector job market. The market dynamics of high mobile penetration, mobile internet growth and strong demand for job-related classifieds from both employers and job seekers in India position Babajob’s product well for growth and scale. Job seekers primarily interact with the company through their mobile phones (Voice, SMS, WAP) to search for better jobs, create basic profiles (digital resumes) and receive premium updates about matching jobs. Job seekers most often discover and pay for Babajob.com services through our strategic partners –e.g. Telcos, handset manufacturers, training institutes, retail channels. Babajob engages with employers through the web and an in-house call centre. Employers post their job openings and which are then digitized and sent to job seekers via their mobile phones.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) – comprise of small organisations (stand-alone stores, restaurants, small offices, etc.) which typically require 2-5 people a month. Institutional – comprises the large chains (retail, hospitality, healthcare) that have large, ongoing staffing requirements – 20+ candidates a month.
Why is the project unique?
The Largest Database of Informal Sector Job Seekers in India – Employers across segments (domestic or institutional) have, to date been challenged in their informal sector hiring by the absence of a consolidated database of relevant, employable job seekers. They have had to rely on agencies (which are expensive and not always credible) or advertising (which is expensive and does not always reach the targeted informal sector job seeker). Babajob is the largest database of informal sector job seekers in India, and enables employers to easily and inexpensively identify and contact a number of potential employees. Empowers the Job Seeker – Traditional agency models have empowered the employer with information and choice. In contrast, Babajob’s solution creates a transparent, efficient job market place by providing both job seekers and employers with information about opportunities and the market rate for services. Both employers and job seekers are therefore aware of all their options and can make informed decisions. A successful match therefore happens only when both parties come to an agreement on all terms of employment. Leverages Mobile Technology – Unlike all other aggregate sources of job information (Monster, Naukri, LinkedIn, ClickIndia, etc.), Babajob does not assume our job seekers have internet access. Instead, the company leverages mobile technology (IVR, SMS, WAP) to interact with job seekers. Job seekers can create profiles (digital resumes), search for openings and apply for interesting jobs through their phones. Easy to Access and Use – Access to Babajob’s various interfaces is free and easily accessible by all job seekers. By creating different interfaces for different customers and providing local language options, the company overcomes constraints of literacy, language and technology sophistication. Inexpensive for Job Seekers – Babajob services are also inexpensive for job seekers to access – mobile handsets are inexpensive and phone and even data plans are increasingly inexpensive. Further, the job alert service, priced at Rs 1 a day, is easily affordable to the majority of mobile phone owners.
