Description

Our aim is to address the everyday classroom challenges that our present day teachers face in most of rural India in Government Elementary and High schools. CLT e-Patashale learning model uses technology as a facilitator to transfer best teaching practices to remote class rooms. We give access to better learning opportunities by connecting urban teachers with the remote rural schools with localized curricula-based e-content and interactive online teaching. We can connect many schools at the same time. CLT provides localized content and live online teaching. We collaborate with Cisco systems for technology support. Contextually Distance Learning is for higher education. However, CLT strongly believes the need of the day is to bring the best of teachers into the children own environment (classrooms) from as early as 5th grade to High School. CLT e-Patashale content DVD library is in close to 75 village schools for 3 years. We have also lent DVDs in our After-school center, where lessons can be navigated by kids at home on their TV / DVD players. But, for online teaching CLT has been working with 5 schools from 5th-8th grades, 4 schools for 10th grade since March 2011, and 5 more schools from October 2011.

How is the project unique?

[Describe the Uniqueness of your Innovation in terms of Originality of Idea / Method/ Business Model/ Technology / Application / Implementation process that your product/project has which makes it different] CLT Resource Centre acts as a Hub where teachers and resource people with subject expertise come together to develop repository of localized multi-media content in regional languages that supports all lessons in all subjects for State-Board syllabus. And, our teachers are connected on-line to several remote classrooms simultaneously with the aid of an interactive software platform to deliver the lessons. The learning environment is very dynamic, as the teachers can share content, use White Board for explanations and students can interact with live discussions! Hence, The model is economical, as the content can be centralized, different teachers will deliver lessons using same content. That brings about standardization of content, yet allowing each teacher to be innovative about how he/she could present with add-ons. It is also practical to leverage the best teaching practices of the urban qualified teachers into resource-starved rural schools. The content is very cost-effective, as it uses Power Points in a very innovative way, as well as video camera, instead of high-end graphic designers. The content is relevant as all lessons are mapped to their syllabus, with extra value additions from the research of other syllabus and internet. These are live teaching sessions with dialogues and discussions, thus raising a new generation of learners.

Roadmap

http://www.youtube.com/cltindia#p/u/13/ab0rGC3175I Roadmap is to replicate the model in other States. Content is easy to replicate into other languages, as the 1st template is in English. (An intern from Microsoft Research Foundation has taken this as a project to develop an Editor, that would save a lot of time with the replication.) Next step would be to set up regional Hubs to facilitate local teachers in other States to downstream content from the cloud and teach rural children. This technology intervention would come from Cisco under their Inclusive Growth project. The same technology would also allow the kids to watch the recorded teaching sessions at a later date. This would partially make up for the void that their parents are not in a position to tutor them at home. CLT vision is to give access to equal learning opportunities for the village children in their own environment. Technology can be a great facilitator to connect urban opportunities with the rural needs! The same c loud technology infrastructure and content will be extended to educate adults. We leverage what we have already built for the children and use the place and platform to reach out to women on health and nutrition and good parenting practices. We can upgrade someone education from 3rd to 7th; 7th to 10 etc. Young adults can learn basic English and computer literacy. All of this with the click of a mouse in their own environment!
