MTicketing – Train Ticket Reservation System

Sri Lanka Railway is currently operating Intercity Trains with advanced booking facility for all major cities of the country. The operation was handled completely manually, quota based method where passengers have to visit Railway Station at an early date to reserve their seats. This has been an inconvenience to passengers as they have to wait in long queues to buy train tickets in advance and come again to the station at the day of the journey. Mobitel, proposed & successfully implemented a solution for this problem which is presently popular as mTicketing. Colombo Kandy Intercity Train Ticket Reservation system has been computerized and made available to purchase tickets over Mobile Phone. A Mobile Subscriber can dial a Short code (365) to access M- Ticketing System and connect with a Contact Center executive to make the reservation on line. Ticket fare will be charged from the Mobile subscriber’s credit facility. User will receive a SMS upon successful reservation with a Reference No. All the reservations performed on the system will be updated online real time. Customers can produce this Reference No. at the Railway station or from any Mobitel Branch island wide and collect the Train ticket. The same system will be accessed by Railway Stations, equipped with Computers, Printers and On Line connectivity and issue tickets for walk in passengers. The whole Train Ticket reservation system was designed, developed and hosted by Mobitel Pvt. Ltd.

 What we deliver

Reachability with convenience for train commuters to make an advanced ticket reservation without making an extra visit to the railway station and without waiting in queues. Sri Lanka Railway staff has also been benefited due to lesser passenger queues and accuracy in automated Financial accounting processes and reporting etc. Train seat utilization has also been increased by 100% as all seats of the train is available online, against previous quota based system, which has allocated a certain number of tickets per each station.

 Whom we deliver

Users will get the same interactivity and exposure for Train schedule information and related details when they access system over the phone. Call Center executives will be accessing the same on line system which is available to Railway stations and hence equipped with real time information on ticket availability.

 Why is the project unique?

This has not been tested or implemented in Sri Lanka before and complete concept, design and project was developed and implemented by Mobitel. A complete process renovation has been introduced to traditional train ticket issuance process opening a new avenue to reserve ticket over Mobile phone.
