Nutrition Surveillance System
The Nutrition Surveillance System has been a pioneer in joint effort by the department of Women and Child Development and UNICEF to improve sentinel surveillance of malnutrition, improving child wise tracking and promoting linkages with other social development schemes and sectors.
What we deliver
Introduction of NSS made this valuable data useable at different levels by ensuring easy analysis and feedback to improve performance. The analysis through NSS was done in the following ways: • Area wise analysis (project wise, sector wise and anganwadi centre wise), • Indicator wise analysis (nutrition indicators as total malnutrition disaggregated by age and health indicators as Maternal and Child Deaths) and • Time wise analysis through graphs generated at all levels (AWC, Sector, Project, District and State levels) and dual maps generated through GIS which give the time series analysis.
Whom we deliver
The project does provide interactivity to the users and the tracking system enabled transparency.
Why is the project unique?
Introduction of NSS made valuable data useable at different levels by ensuring easy analysis and feedback to improve performance. Data analyzed through the geographic information systems (GIS) embedded in the software is a potential tool for sensitizing functionaries on various performance indicators of ICDS as well as prepare action plans for improving low performing indicators or areas. Analysis shows that over a period of time, the reporting system of ICDS has shown improvement both in terms of quantity and quality. The Nutrition Surveillance System has been a pioneer in joint effort by the department of Women and Child Development and UNICEF to improve sentinel surveillance of malnutrition, improving child wise tracking and promoting linkages with other social development schemes and sectors. It is hoped that this system will improve achievements for MDGs 1, 4 and 5.
Roadmap
We hope the same project shall be replicated by other states to enable the tracking system to operate in a systematic & transparent manner.
