Description

Educational Interventions at SVYM envisions breaking the cycle of poverty for families by improving the quality of education at the school level and encouraging students to pursue meaningful, job-oriented degrees by providing scholarships and innovative family saving programs. The goals of the project are to improve the learning environment in a school; quality of teacher student transaction and quality of the child’s mental and emotional process. All this will be done in collaboration with the school management, teachers, industry and families. SVYM Education is focused on measurable outcomes with a special focus on secondary education. The impact of SVYM education intervention on student learning is measured in two ways: (1) the SSLC results and (2) external assessment The following are key measurement metrics; a)Improvement over the average of the last 5 years b)Increase the average pass percentage, adjusted to state trends of each school by (100%-Existing%)/5 every year where existing% is the average of the past 5 years pass percentage of the school.c) Improvement in the number of distinctions and first class d) We also engage external assessment agencies to measure pre and post learning levels for a control and experimental group.

Whom we deliver?

We have designed a technology powered supplemental education system to serve the secondary schools. The children of secondary schools are the target beneficiaries. Their exploration of concepts using our technology based intervention improves their learning levels and contributes to the improvement of the school pass percentages. All of this is done by closely working with teachers and the Headmasters of the secondary school by making them beneficiaries of our intervention.

How is the project unique?

Schools across the world use the SmartBoard (interactive whiteboards http://smarttech.com/) to help improve learning outcomes. We have strived to provide a similar experience to the child, contextualizing it to a secondary government school in India in terms of costs, lack of power, infrastructure, curriculum, catering to a large numbers of students who are at different academic levels and have severe time constraints etc. We have transformed and adapted the interactive classroom experience of a SmartBoard Class into an Indian Government high School where the child is directed by the teacher to interactively learning concepts where she needs help and is appropriate to her learning level and an objective. Our classroom and SaAth e-library centers have through technology enabled children to prepare themselves for the teacher class by a) strengthening their fundamentals and b) learning 10th concepts at their own pace and c) learning with their friends. The above learning processes are supplemented with technology to analyze a class exam. These personalized reports are made available to the school management, teachers and students. Our innovation and creativity is in the adaptation and deployment of technology enabled learning to an Indian secondary government school environment. The uniqueness is in the following; The need to develop content, as an NGO, at 10% of what it costs anywhere Deploying an interactive learning environment in rural classrooms where there is no power and qualified manpower Fitting into learners who are at different academic levels and have severe time constraints etc. Dover tailing it into an environment that is bereft of individuals who know and can handle technology Fitting it into a government system that has widespread apathy to improvements The need to cater to a large numbers of students whose learning has been compromised all their lives. The deployment continues to need tremendous amount of innovation in terms of sustainability, cost structures, funding etc…

Roadmap

Scaling without compromising on quality is our next step. We are on the threshold of fundamental contributions to education in Karnataka, and we need to master the art of influencing teachers to improve quality of secondary schools. We are delivering our promise of being an operational engine to improve the process of catalyzing every teacher in the system to adopt best practices. We need to catalyze contributions from the best teachers and deliver it through partners to vast number of children Our vision is to impact approximately 50% of secondary school children in Karnataka in the next three years. Our vision is also to develop the child holistically. We will deliver solutions that allow facilitators to create an environment where children recognize their own potential through activities that stimulate their body and soul and invite their mind to involve itself. We need to build a generation with the right values and skills to be excellent. Challenge – Technology must solve distribution of our products. We must be able to deliver on smart phones and mobiles, operating out of 3G and 4G mobile networks; a powerful approach for personalized learning considering India per capita mobile penetration – We will build India.
