Description

Even as developed countries are groping in the dark about ways of saving our planet Earth from the ill-effects of carbon production, some developing nations like India have understood the responsibility of finding new and renewable sources of energy. The Kongu Community Radio has taken it upon itself to create awareness among listeners about global warming and climate change. A community radio programme titled Vazhum Bhoomi (Living Earth) is being broadcast every day since the last 8 months highlighting simple methods of conserving energy at grass root level, the effect of industrial revolution and the production of energy from fossil fuels, need for conservation of energy and the necessity to go in for new, renewable and nonconventional energy sources.

To promote science communication and create a sense of participation to create awareness on understanding Planet Earth and energy conservation to demystify myths and illusions to dissemination of important facts and achievements.

Roadmap

The advantage of radio is that it can be accessed from anywhere at anytime. The receiver need not have power supply. Hence this can reach areas which are not provided with electrical power. Power failures do not hamper reception. At times when due to unforeseen circumstances like floods, earthquakes, cyclones or even Tsunami electric supply is cut off, radio has served as the only means of communication by which the affected people could be reached and assisted. It will be in the fitness of things if the information available with the local authorities is provided to the community radio stations, it can be very useful in communicating available information quickly and effectively through community radio.

How is the project unique?

Popularize science among listeners to create awareness on global warming and climate change. Disseminating scientific facts and information among children and people at grass root level.  Liberating scientific awareness among rural communities for development.
